Orthodontist in Chicago, IL

Comprehensive orthodontic care for children and adults using advanced techniques to create beautiful, healthy smiles, with Medicaid accepted for qualifying patients.

Crooked teeth, gaps, and bite problems affect more than your appearance. Left untreated, misaligned teeth can lead to difficulty chewing, jaw pain, uneven wear, and a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Modern orthodontic treatment corrects these issues with options ranging from traditional braces to virtually invisible clear aligners, giving children and adults in Chicago a path to healthier, better-aligned smiles.

At Sonrisa Family Dental, our orthodontic team provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages across our multiple Chicago locations. Founded by Dr. Jason Korkus, DDS, our practice proudly accepts Medicaid and Medicare for orthodontic services, making quality care accessible to families throughout Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. Our bilingual staff serves patients in both English and Spanish, so every family member feels comfortable and informed throughout treatment.

Why Does a Well-Aligned Smile Matter?

A well-aligned smile supports good oral health, optimal jaw function, and overall well-being. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reduce your risk of cavities and gum disease, and help prevent uneven wear and TMJ disorders. Although every smile is different, the potential consequences of teeth that are overcrowded, have spaces between them, have shifted, or don’t come together properly remain the same, affecting both function and appearance.

  • Straight teeth have fewer hard-to-reach areas where food can get trapped, lowering your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Teeth that meet correctly are protected by the lips and soft tissues, making them less vulnerable to trauma or fractures.
  • Properly aligned teeth allow you to bite, chew, and speak without difficulty or impediment.
  • Teeth and jaws that are well-aligned prevent uneven and excessive areas of wear.
  • A good bite supports temporomandibular joint function. A poor occlusion can cause headaches, jaw pain, and difficulty opening your mouth.
  • With good oral health and well-being mutually dependent, a well-aligned smile is essential to overall wellness.

Visiting an orthodontist in Chicago is the first step toward correcting these issues and protecting your long-term oral health.

What Type of Braces Are Right for You?

The right type of braces depends on the severity of your alignment issue, your age, your lifestyle preferences, and your budget. Traditional metal braces remain the most effective option for complex cases, while clear aligners offer a discreet alternative for mild to moderate corrections.

At Sonrisa Family Dental, we provide integrated orthodontic care in Chicago to help children and adults enjoy well-aligned, beautiful, and healthy smiles. Whether your visit is for a dental checkup or an orthodontic consultation, we’ll assess the look, health, and function of your smile and advise you on the best treatment approach.

We also keep a close watch on your child’s developing smile and will let you know the best time for an orthodontic consultation. From checking the emergence of baby teeth and jaw development to the eruption and alignment of permanent teeth, we carefully monitor your child’s smile as they grow, ensuring optimal timing for any needed intervention.

The following table compares the most common orthodontic treatment options available at our Chicago practice:

  • Traditional metal braces: Visible, best for complex cases at all ages, 18–36 months average treatment
  • Ceramic braces: Less visible (tooth-colored), best for teens and adults wanting discretion, 18–36 months
  • Lingual braces: Hidden behind teeth, best for adults wanting an invisible fixed option, 18–36 months
  • Self-ligating braces: Visible or ceramic, best for patients wanting fewer adjustments, 12–30 months
  • Clear aligners: Nearly invisible, best for mild to moderate cases in teens and adults, 6–18 months

Whether fixed braces, clear aligners, or another appliance offer the best path to optimal results depends on several factors specific to each patient. Our Chicago orthodontic team will walk you through every option during your consultation.

What Factors Affect Orthodontic Treatment?

Several clinical and lifestyle factors determine the length, cost, and complexity of your orthodontic treatment:

  • The severity of the malocclusion or bite problem
  • The degree of crowding or spacing of the teeth
  • If dental extractions are required
  • The relationship between the upper and lower jaws
  • How long is needed
  • If any additional supportive appliances are required
  • Patient compliance with oral hygiene, appliance maintenance, and wear

Your orthodontist in Chicago will evaluate each of these factors during your initial consultation to recommend the most effective treatment plan.

What Innovations Are Shaping Orthodontic Care Today?

Digital imaging, 3D treatment planning, and advanced aligner materials have made orthodontic treatment faster, more comfortable, and more precise than ever before. As orthodontic treatment has become more widely available and the appearance of braces has improved, the number of people getting orthodontic treatment has skyrocketed. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, over four million people in the United States alone wear braces, with approximately 27% being adults.

Some of the most notable innovations in orthodontic care include the following:

  • Smaller, streamlined metal bracket design
  • Clear, cosmetic brackets
  • Self-ligating braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Clear aligners
  • 3-D imaging with CBCT
  • Digital impressions and intraoral scanners
  • 3-D planning software
  • Temporary anchorage devices (TADs)
  • Accelerated orthodontics

These advances allow our Chicago orthodontic team to deliver faster results with greater patient comfort than earlier generations of braces and appliances.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligners use a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays to gently and incrementally move teeth into their correct positions without metal brackets or wires. Since their arrival over two decades ago, clear aligners have revolutionized orthodontic care, offering many patients a discreet, comfortable, and convenient solution for improving their smiles.

Custom-made to the exact specifications of a patient’s smile, clear aligners are designed to move teeth into their correct positions. As patients swap out one aligner for the next in the prescribed series, they witness progressive improvements. Best of all, with treatment that is virtually invisible, no one but the patient knows they are undergoing orthodontic care.

By transforming smiles with minimal interference to daily activities, clear aligners allow patients to enjoy all their favorite foods and engage in recreational activities without fear of breaking their appliances. Moreover, as the aligners are completely removable, there’s no need to struggle to brush and floss between brackets and wires, maintaining excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment.

While clear aligner therapy is not a solution for every type of malocclusion, it offers an excellent option for many image-conscious teens and adults. At Sonrisa Family Dental, whether you are a candidate for clear aligners or another method of orthodontic care, we’ll help you achieve a well-aligned and attractive smile.

When Should Children Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Children should see an orthodontist no later than age 7. By this age, most alignment and jaw growth problems can be identified, even while baby teeth are still present. Most parents wonder when the best time is to have their child evaluated for braces. One common misconception is to wait until all permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) are present. However, an orthodontist can identify most problems involving alignment and jaw growth by the time a child is in the first or second grade.

How Long Do You Have to Wear Braces?

On average, comprehensive orthodontic treatment takes 18 to 36 months. More limited alignment corrections typically range from 6 to 18 months. Whether you are wearing conventional braces, clear aligners, or any other appliance, orthodontic movement is a gradual process based on light, continuous forces to correct your bite in an incremental and healthy manner.

The total duration of care depends on several factors, including growth patterns and compliance with care. Treatment time does not include the period of wearing retainers to maintain results.

How Often Do You Need to Be Seen After Your Braces Are Placed?

Most follow-up appointments after braces are placed are scheduled every four to eight weeks. This interval gives your teeth time to move at a steady and healthy pace. However, there may be situations where more frequent visits to evaluate tooth movement or make additional adjustments are required.

Can Adults Get Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes, teeth can be moved at any age, and orthodontic treatment as an adult can completely transform a poorly aligned smile. However, achieving a successful outcome relies on healthy teeth and supporting bone. For these reasons, it is essential for adult patients to address any outstanding dental problems before appliances are placed and to remain diligent about maintaining their oral health throughout care.

For adults seeking orthodontic care, achieving a successful outcome relies on healthy teeth and supporting bone. Adults sometimes exhibit the damaging consequences of uncorrected bites and poorly aligned teeth, including extensive dental decay, gum disease, bone loss, or even tooth extractions. They may also suffer from worn-down teeth or TMJ dysfunction.

While it’s critical to address outstanding dental issues before starting care, it’s also important to maintain the health of teeth and surrounding tissues both during and following treatment. Although adult orthodontics requires an investment of time and resources, the payoff is well worth it. The value of a healthy and attractive smile is priceless.

How Do You Maintain Your Smile After Orthodontic Treatment?

Wearing retainers as prescribed is the most important step in maintaining your results after braces or aligners are removed. Retainers prevent teeth from shifting back toward their original positions.

Almost every individual who has undergone orthodontic care will need to wear some type of retainer for a prescribed period of time. One of the reasons retainers are needed is that the delicate fibers connecting teeth to the jawbones have elastic memory. Once orthodontic appliances are removed, these fibers want to rebound to their natural positions. Wearing retainers allows these fibers to reorganize and reset.

Retainers are also extremely important because the teeth are part of a complex masticatory system subject to forces that cannot always be predicted. Even after orthodontic treatment, tongue or lip postures, unfavorable growth, oral habits, and periodontal problems can disrupt alignment. Committing to wearing retainers is the best way to keep your teeth as straight and beautiful as the day your braces were removed.
