Embarking on an orthodontic journey can feel both exciting and intimidating. The promise of a straighter, healthier smile brings joy, but questions about discomfort, appearance, and timeline may cause hesitation. Many patients enter treatment without a clear understanding of what happens beyond getting braces or aligners placed, which can lead to unnecessary anxiety about the process.

At Sonrisa Family Dental, our team of orthodontic specialists works with patients of all ages throughout Chicago, providing personalized care with both traditional braces and clear aligner options. With our detailed treatment plans and ongoing support, you’ll know exactly what to expect as you progress toward your ideal smile.

Initial Consultation and Planning

The foundation of successful orthodontic treatment begins before any appliances are placed. This crucial planning stage sets the course for your entire treatment journey.

During your first visit, our orthodontic team will perform a comprehensive assessment that includes examining your teeth and jaw alignment, taking digital X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth. We’ll discuss your specific concerns and treatment goals to ensure we develop a plan that addresses both functional and aesthetic considerations.

In the treatment planning phase, we’ll explain our findings, recommend the most appropriate treatment approach, provide an estimated timeline, and discuss financial considerations. This consultation gives you the opportunity to ask questions and address concerns before active treatment begins.

Beginning Active Treatment

Whether you’ve chosen traditional braces or clear aligners, the initial placement appointment typically takes 1-2 hours but is generally not uncomfortable.

For traditional braces, we’ll prepare your tooth surfaces, apply bonding materials, precisely place brackets, and install archwires. With clear aligners, we’ll verify that your first set fits properly, install any necessary attachments, and provide instructions on wear time and maintenance.

The first week represents the most significant adjustment period of your entire treatment. You might experience mild to moderate soreness, slight irritation where appliances contact soft tissues, and pressure as teeth begin to shift. These sensations typically peak around day 2-3 before gradually subsiding. Over-the-counter pain relievers, dental wax (for braces), and soft foods can help manage any discomfort during this brief period.

Active Treatment Phase

During the main portion of your orthodontic journey, your teeth gradually move into their proper position through consistent, gentle pressure applied by your braces or aligners.

For traditional braces, you’ll visit us approximately every 4-8 weeks for adjustments, where we’ll change archwires, replace elastic bands, and monitor your progress. Clear aligner patients typically visit less frequently (every 8-12 weeks) but continue treatment by changing to new aligners at home according to your prescribed schedule.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene becomes especially important during this phase. Braces wearers should brush after every meal using a soft brush, floss daily with specialized tools, and consider using antimicrobial mouth rinses. Aligner patients must brush their teeth before reinserting aligners after eating, clean them daily, and never eat or drink (except water) while wearing them.

Refinement Phase

As you approach the end of your primary treatment period, we’ll conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess your progress compared to the original goals. Sometimes, teeth respond differently than anticipated, requiring minor modifications to achieve ideal alignment.

For traditional braces, refinements might involve repositioning select brackets, using different elastic patterns, or making precise wire adjustments. Clear aligner patients may need additional scans for a new series of “refinement aligners” and possible modification of attachments. While this phase may slightly extend your treatment beyond the initial estimate, these fine adjustments significantly affect your final results.

Retention Phase

The day your braces come off or you complete your last aligner marks a significant milestone, but retention is crucial for maintaining your newly aligned smile. During your final appointment, we’ll remove all orthodontic appliances, clean your teeth, and fit you with appropriate retainers, which may include both fixed and removable options.

Most patients follow a retention protocol that begins with full-time wear for several months, transitions to nighttime wear for 1-2 years, and eventually maintains results with several nights per week indefinitely. Consistent retainer use prevents teeth from shifting back to their previous positions and protects your investment in orthodontic treatment.
